Fish identifier

What did I just catch?

Take a photo, upload one, or answer four questions. We match it against the species we track on the Grand Strand. It is a shortlist to compare against — never a positive ID.

Photo ID

Snap it or upload it

A clear side-on shot, in focus, before the fish dries out. We match it against the species on the Grand Strand — a shortlist, not a positive ID.

Use the live camera, the phone camera app, or a photo you already have.

No photo?

Answer a few questions about shape, markings, where it hit and how big it was.

Question 1 of 4

What shape was it?

Look at the outline, not the colour — shape survives a wet phone photo better than anything else.

Still not sure?

Take a clear side-on photo before the fish dries out, then compare it to the illustration on the species page. Pier staff identify fish all day and are usually happy to look. For anything you plan to keep — and for anything that might be a protected or regulated species — go to SCDNR Marine Resources and check the size and bag limits first. If you cannot identify it with confidence, release it.
